We serve approximately 84,000 students in nearly 200 Catholic schools in the City of Toronto and represent close to 475,000 Catholic school supporters.<p>With a staff of 14,000, the Toronto Catholic is a dynamic school board and is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter. <p>PLEASE NOTE: THE WORK SCHEDULE IS 10 MONTHS HOURS OF WORK: SEVEN (7) HOURS PER DAY <p> CRITERIA FOR INTERVIEW: 3-year College Diploma in American Sign Language English Interpreter Program or equivalent<p> Minimum one (1) year of related experience<p> Fluent in ASL, English and manually-coded English<p> General knowledge of Secondary School curriculaMAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: <p>The primary function of this job is to act as the interpreter of communication between the deaf and hard of hearing students and the mainstream teachers and students; to provide direct and full access to the regular classroom (especially subject specialization) areas and to have access to all school services and to participate in extra-curricular activities. Acts as interpreter for deaf and hard of hearing students, regular student(s)/teacher(s) in a normal classroom setting<p> Carries the cultural interpretation of ideas and messages across the boundaries of the deaf and hard of hearing community and that of the spoken language community<p> Provides interpreting services for hearing impaired student(s)/regular student(s)/teacher(s) at various school events, assemblies, school masses, school plays, sports teams, student council, retreats, meetings, appointments, interviews, etc.<p> Carries out preparation for participation in classroom, special meetings, events, etc. such as meeting with teacher(s) to know what the goal is/discuss lesson plans, reading/reviewing course materials, attending planning/rehearsal sessions<p> Carries out cross-cultural mediation and bimodal communication<p> Instructs the school staff and students about the role of the interpreter by giving workshops, handouts and conducting role plays<p> Perform other duties as assignedNOTE: All applicants must be practicing Roman Catholics verified through a pastoral recommendation from a Roman Catholic Parish Priest #TCDSBcareers Diversity and Inclusion: <p> The TCDSB is committed to fostering a diverse workforce.
