Job details
Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority seeks a knowledgeable and culturally sensitive Social Studies teacher to guide our high school students in exploring history, geography, civics, and global issues. The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of the Alberta Social Studies curriculum and a passion for fostering a classroom environment that promotes critical thinking and respectful dialogue and honours Indigenous perspectives.<p>Key Responsibilities: <p> Curriculum Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging instruction aligned with the Alberta Social Studies curriculum. Infuse Indigenous histories, worldviews, and contemporary issues throughout the course content. <p> Critical Analysis: Teach students to analyze historical events, diverse perspectives, current issues, and their interconnectedness from multiple viewpoints, including Indigenous perspectives. <p> Inquiry-Based Learning: Facilitate inquiry-based learning experiences that encourage student exploration, questioning, and examining primary and secondary source materials. <p> Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Design culturally responsive lessons and activities that respect, value, and center Indigenous knowledge, experiences, and voices. <p> Differentiated Instruction: Employ diverse instructional strategies to cater to various learning styles, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Implement adaptations and supports to ensure accessibility for all students, recognizing the unique needs of Indigenous learners. <p> Assessment and Evaluation: Develop and administer formative and summative assessments that align with learning goals and measure student progress in acquiring both content knowledge and critical thinking skills. <p> Classroom Management: Establish a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment that promotes open dialogue and respectful discourse on sensitive topics and aligns with Indigenous cultural values and practices. <p> Guidance and Mentorship: Support students' growth as informed and engaged citizens, encouraging thoughtful participation in class discussions and community projects. Connect students with Elders or Knowledge Keepers where appropriate. <p> Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues, parents/guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff to enhance student learning outcomes and well-being. <p> Professional Development: Actively participate in professional development opportunities to improve teaching practice, explore new methods in social studies instruction, and deepen understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues.<p>Qualifications: <p> Bachelor's Degree in Education with a specialization in Social Studies or related fields. <p> Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate. <p> Demonstrated knowledge of the Alberta Social Studies curriculum. <p> Experience teaching high school Social Studies courses. <p> Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. <p> Strong research, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. <p> Ability to facilitate complex discussions with sensitivity and respect <p> Commitment to inclusion, equity, and building a culturally inclusive learning environment.<p>Additional Desired Skills: <p> Experience in integrating technology for innovative teaching and learning. <p> Familiarity with assessment for learning principles and practices. <p> Knowledge of adolescent development and psychology. <p> Experience working in Indigenous communities or a strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, perspectives, and knowledge systems.<p>Why Work With Us?<p>We offer paid time off for professional development and non-instructional days, sick days, health and dental benefits, a health spending account
