Education: Degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or optometry. Veterinary medicine (DVM). Work setting: Private practice. Veterinary clinic. Animal hospital. Tasks: Diagnose diseases or abnormal conditions in individual animals, herds and flocks through physical examinations or laboratory tests. Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, setting bones, dressing wounds or performing surgery. Vaccinate animals to prevent and treat diseases. Advise clients on feeding, housing, behaviour, breeding, hygiene and general care of animals. Administer treatments as prescribed by veterinarian. Assist veterinarian before, during and after surgery. Knowledge of licensing regulations. Perform routine animal dental procedures and assist veterinarians with animal dentistry. Supervision: 3-4 people. Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses : Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Certification. Licensure by provincial or territorial authorities. Security and safety: Criminal record check. Driver's validity licence check. Work conditions and physical capabilities: Attention to detail. Standing for extended periods.
