Job details
St. John?s Anglican Church is looking to hire a new Music Director for our congregation. There is a long history of music and choral ministry at St. John?s and we are looking for the right person to work with us as we begin the next chapter in our music ministry.
Currently, St. John?s has one service a week on Sunday morning at which the Music Director provides music. There is a choir of approximately 12 members, most of which have choral training and participate in several choirs. The choir takes summers off (July and August), and throughout the rest of the year is active on Sunday mornings for worship, as well as other worship services throughout the year. We use a digital piano that has a variety of settings to recreate both piano and organ sounds. Our parish sings principally out of Common Praise, and we also own copies of Sing a New Creation. We are looking to diversify our congregational song repertoire by exploring this new collection, while at the same time making sure parishioners get the opportunity to sing their ?old favourite stompers?.
The current position of music director is budgeted for approximately 10-12 hours per week and pay will be in line with RCCO scale to an annual maximum of $20,000. There is room to expand the hours and pay of the position should the successful candidate recruit and lead in a way that grows the choir and the music program at our church. In the past the parish has held evensong services, various concert series, and even a youth choir. These could be areas of expansion and growth. The Music Director will also have first right of refusal on all weddings and funerals at the church, and can set their own rate with regards for these services.
At St. John?s we very much prefer to work as a team in ways that are consultative and collaborative. As well, we operate by the Canons, Bylaws, and Regulations of the Diocese of Ottawa. The Music Director would report directly to the Incumbent and Wardens. With this in mind we are looking for a Music Director that is:
* Familiar with (or willing to learn) Anglican liturgy and the liturgical seasons
* Works well as a team, and is willing to work with the Rector (and worship team) around the selection of hymns for worship
* Believes that worship is a participatory event, and has the ability to help animate the music during worship to encourage and inspire participation
* Comfortable with both traditional, contemporary, and multi-cultural styles of music
* Has experience with directing a choir, is comfortable playing in both piano and organ style, and is able to lead solo when needed
* Willing to conduct regular choir practices, actively recruit new choir members, and create an open, welcoming, and supportive culture within the choir and parish
* Positive in their attitude, and has strong interpersonal skills
* Comfortable with the idea that the goal of worship leaders is to provide a liturgical experience that is spiritually fulfilling to the congregation that has gathered, and in a way that works best for the congregation
* Willing to maintain and update our music licenses and library
