Want to get paid for on-the job training and have a clear path for advancement? Are you physically fit? Want to perform quality work and provide outstanding service? Then you may want to consider a career as a commercial Sheet Metal Worker in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Paragon Ventilation has immediate opportunities available for 1st or 2nd level Sheet Metal workers *OR* individuals looking to enter the commercial Sheet Metal trade.
As an apprentice for Paragon Ventilation, you will either work in our fabrication shop located in South East Edmonton, or at one of our various job sites located in and around Edmonton. A sheet metal worker will:
· Utilize and interpret blueprints to determine how and where to fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal products
· Measure, mark dimensions and lay out sheet metal products to be installed using tools such as scribes, rulers, calculators and squares
· Fasten joints and seams in sheet metal with solder, welds, caulk, bolts and metal driver clips, ensuring work is done carefully and bonds will last
· Assemble, drill, anchor and install HVAC sheet metal parts according to product specifications in supportive frameworks
· Ensure that efficiency is maximized while fabricating and installing HVAC systems
· Use hand and power tools to trim, buff, smooth, file and grind metal surfaces and joints of parts that have been assembled to ensure safety and a seamless appearance
· Ensure safety is a priority on the job during all activities, including using tools and installing and fabricating metal
You don?t need any previous experience although any sort of hands-on construction related experience would be an asset. You will start out at a wage of $20.00/hr and you will be paid to attend any required safety related training. We will help you register as an apprentice with Alberta Apprenticeship in the first 3 months that you are with us, and you will work under a certified journeyman sheet metal worker.
The term of apprenticeship for a sheet metal worker is 4 years (four 12-month periods) including a minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job training and 10 weeks of classroom instruction each year. As a first period apprentice, you will work for approx. 10 months or 1500 hours, after which you will go to school at NAIT for 10 weeks. You will then come back to work for us and upon confirmation of successful completion, you will receive an immediate raise to $26.00/hr, plus you would then qualify for health & dental benefits, a RRSP matching program, and an annual safety spending allowance. The cycle then repeats, and as you progress through the apprenticeship periods, you would be eligible for raises from $26.00 to $30.00 to $34.00, and finally to the journeyman rate of $40.00 per hour.
The four year program can pass by quite quickly, and with the regular wage increases, a career in sheet metal can be very rewarding and provides for a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day. The field work is mostly indoors, and you will be able to gain experience working in a wide variety of industries, settings, and types of structures.
You will require your own transportation to and from local jobsites in and around the Edmonton area.
