We are seeking an experienced, licensed, full-time *Veterinarian *responsible for supporting Ontario SPCA Animal Centres with medical oversight and support for both individual medical cases and population-based medicine cases. Our veterinarians work under the direction of the Chief Veterinary Officer and collaborate with a team of veterinarians and operations managers to support the maintenance of preventative health programs and shelter medicine protocols.
This role provides veterinary support through telemedicine services and on-site visits to Central and Northern Animal Centre locations. The Veterinarian will provide opportunities to perform surgeries and procedures and the species supported are mainly cats and dogs, small animals, and birds.
*Roles and Responsibilities *
· Provide telemedicine and in-person support for individual and population-based medical cases across 12 provincial Ontario SPCA Animal Centres. Services are provided for both animals in shelters and animals out of shelters in foster homes.
· Actively advocate for animals in care in collaboration with Ontario SPCA Animal Centre teams across the province to ensure medical, emotional, and behavioural needs are met through daily and weekly rounds with Ontario SPCA Centre Managers, RVT, and animal care staff.
· Provide direct medical oversight for populations of animals transferred into care through the Ontario SPCA Provincial Animal Transfer Hub. Responsibilities include physical examinations, intake procedures specialized testing, and disease tracking based on origin, as well as disease outbreak management.
· Utilizes the Society?s shelter medicine software to monitor, support, and track animals in care across the province virtually.
· Medical case collaboration with external VCPRs and specialists.
· Development of policies, protocols, and disclosures in collaboration with the Shelter Health & Wellness team.
· Ensures Ontario SPCA policies and procedures related to infection control are followed.
· Research, track, and implement shelter intake measures for emerging infectious diseases across the province and within communities where transferred animals originate.
· Actively participate in continuing education activities to keep up with the latest advancements and conferences, speaking opportunities, and industry events
*Qualifications*
· Licensed to practice veterinary medicine within the province of Ontario
· Be a member in good standing with the CVO
· Population-based medicine and shelter medicine experience are an asset
· Experience in telemedicine or a similar role in a veterinary clinic
· Resilient attitude when faced with unpredictable or emotionally demanding situations
· Demonstrated working knowledge and commitment to animal welfare practices and philosophies
· Sound judgment and decision-making ability
· Ability to travel to Animal Centres as required
