Vancouver Island Brewing is closing its Victoria facility in November, with the taproom closing in September. The brewery has been open since 1984 and is one of the oldest in B.C. The closure is due to a 35% rent increase. The closure will affect 15 employees.
A&W, a fast-food chain, is opening Canada's first walk-up window in Victoria. The 1,400 sq. ft. location will offer late-night options.
Western Forest Products has opened a new drying kiln at their Ladysmith sawmill on Vancouver Island which will increase capacity for value added products for mass timber use. The kiln has an annual capacity of around 70 million board feet and will produce higher value specialty products. The company plans to spend another $35 million for new drying kilns in other plants.
The B.C. government has transferred 212 hectares of land on Te'tuxwtun (Mount Benson East) near Nanaimo to the Snuneymuxw First Nation. The land transfer is a step in the reconciliation process that will create economic activity in forestry and protect the wildlife habitat and environment.
