Portage la Prairie’s shopping mall is permanently closing on December 31, 2024. Four clothing retailers have closed their Winnipeg shops over the past year, citing the high cost of maintaining brick-and-mortar stores. Downtown menswear stores Hobbyism, Cntrbnd, and Livestock Winnipeg have closed up shop, as has Style Bar, a women's boutique in Osborne Village. Some will continue to sell clothing online.

The provincial government is extending its pause on new licenses for controlled-access cannabis stores until December 2025. Controlled-access stores are businesses, such as gas bars, that are open to customers of all ages but restrict access to cannabis products. This is in contrast to stores that exclusively carry cannabis products and only admit customers of legal age.

A gourmet grocery store called Food… by Forks Trading Co. has opened at the Forks in Winnipeg for a one-year pilot project. The Forks Trading Company has hired five people to staff the new shop. Grocery offerings should continue to expand at the Forks in anticipation of a residential development about to begin construction nearby.

7-Eleven is closing four Winnipeg locations, on Ellice Avenue, McPhillips Street, and Pembina Highway. Company officials informed the City this summer that 10 stores were at risk of closing due to excessive theft. Two of the four stores now closing were on that list of 10.

D’Arcy’s ARC Thrift Store, located on Winnipeg’s Main Street, has permanently closed after 16 years in business. The store, which funds an animal rescue centre, has dealt with rising costs, shoplifting, and safety concerns in recent years.
