The Government of Northwest Territories workforce grew by over 1,000 employees from 2018 to 2024. According to Statistics Canada, the public sector in the NWT has been a larger economic driver than the mining, oil, and gas sector since 2020. Most of the employment increases occurred in the territorial health authority, which increased staffing by 50% – adding 600 employees – from 2018 to 2023.

The federal government is providing $758,000 for two organizations to address gender-based violence and support 2SLGBTQI+ communities in the Northwest Territories. FOXY is receiving $438,750 to develop a gender-based violence prevention program, and Qmunity Camp NWT is receiving $319,491 to provide resources for training, governance, and policy.

A new wage grid for licensed child care centre workers came into effect in the Northwest Territories on November 14. The wage grid is an amendment to the territorial government’s NWT Early Learning and Child Care Regulations. A new certification process was added to the Regulations, requiring child care workers at centres to be certified.

Over 20 Indigenous governments in the Northwest Territories signed a new $375M funding agreement for Indigenous-led, long-term conservation efforts, effective mid-2025. The draft agreement includes creating government jobs and a process to determine funding allocation and use. Non-conservation activities may qualify for funding, such as eco-tourism, climate research, and emergency planning.

The Government of Northwest Territories (GNWT), the federal government, the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, and Inuvialuit Qitunrariit Inuuniarnikkun Maligaksat have finalized the Inuvialuit Coordination Agreement and Fiscal Agreement. Under this agreement, Maligaksat will provide community and social support services for the Inuvialuit, shifting this responsibility from the GNWT. However, the GNWT will continue to handle protection and prevention services
